Washington State School Directors’ Association — Position Available

The Washington State School Directors’ Association (WSSDA) is a small state agency located in Olympia that provides leadership, advocacy and services to support public school directors’ efforts to improve student learning.  Serving 1,477 locally elected school board members, WSSDA has an outstanding record of service.  The association seeks a Communication Specialist to provide research, writing, design and formatting, editing, and general assistance to the Director of Communications in the publishing of WSSDA materials, manuals, brochures, news articles, and promotional materials.

General Description

This position reports to the Director of Communications and typically leads or coordinates various projects in the development and preparation of communication materials. This includes researching, writing, editing, designing, and formatting in both print and electronic format.

Required Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Research, write and/or gather articles in AP style, edit, design and produce WSSDA’s monthly newsletter and periodic issue briefs/reports
  • Consult with other WSSDA departments regarding the development of publications, advising on format, language, content, editorial assistance, production and design
  • As needed, design, write and/or edit and produce publications for other departments, including conference and meeting guides, registration materials, agency reports, promotional items, brochures, flyers and advertisements
  • Write articles and post to the WSSDA website
  • Convert publications to electronic format for posting on the WSSDA website
  • Consult with graphic designers and other professionals in the design and production of projects.
  • Take and format digital photographs for use in WSSDA publications and online.
  • Perform other work as required.

Essential Functions:

  • Communicate effectively orally and in writing, with particular emphasis on summarizing complex issues quickly and concisely
  • Know and utilize methods, techniques and software related to graphic design and printing, and online publishing
  • Produce accurate, professional publications and documents incorporating proper use of English grammar, AP style, punctuation, spelling, graphic arts and design standards.
  • Complete the production of publications and delivery of services in a timely and efficient manner
  • Maintain regular and timely work attendance, and availability as work load and assignments require
  • Engage in appropriate and consistent professional development.Write support documents, documentation, and user guides
  • Work well under pressure to meet multiple and sometimes competing deadlines, and at all times demonstrate cooperative behavior with colleagues and supervisors

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree involving major study in communications, public relations, journalism or comparable experience
  • Minimum of two years of experience in communications, journalism and/or graphics design and publishing.                                     
  • Experience with Microsoft Windows programs, PhotoShop and In-Design software
  • Experience with software related to electronic publishing and social media
