Information for Session Presenters

Many thanks to those who submitted proposals for presenting at the WSSDA Annual Conference. The selection of presenters has now been made and we look forward to another year of outstanding sessions focused on supporting public school directors’ efforts to improve student learning.

Session presenters: What you need to know

As you develop your presentation, we recommend you review the Presenter Guidelines and Session Standards  (see below) to refresh your memory on standards expected by WSSDA.  Also, we ask that you confirm the final details of your session, place your order for A/V equipment, and, if needed, update your list of session presenters.

Please note the following deadlines; links are provided to online forms for submitting your information.

Conference details

Conference Dates: November 20-22, 2008 (Early Bird workshops, November 19)
Location: Spokane Convention Center and DoubleTree Hotel
Session Length: 1 hour, 15 minutes
Target Audience: School board members and superintendents from rural, small districts to urban, large districts.
Board Member Involvement: School directors are encouraged to take an active role in presentation development and delivery and to address the school board’s role in the project, program or issue being presented.

Presenter guidelines

  1. Presenters must agree to all Presenter Guidelines for participation.
  2. Presenters are responsible for all arrangements and expenses necessary for participation in the Conference program.
  3. Any board member or superintendent participating in the presentation must register as an attendee of the Conference and pay the registration fee. Other individuals who will be assisting in the presentation will receive a speaker’s pass for the presentation day only.
  4. Under no circumstances may a presenter promote a product, service, or anything else representing monetary self-interest.
  5. Presenters agree to provide at least one handout in electronic and paper format. Paper handouts are to be provided at the presenter’s expense in quantities sufficient for room size; electronic copies are to be sent to WSSDA to be made available to attendees post conference.
  6. Presenters must allow time for the completion of WSSDA-provided evaluations at the end of the session.
  7. Presenters at WSSDA’s Annual Conference are expected to use material and language that is appropriate and does not discriminate.
  8. Session Contact will serve as primary contact for WSSDA, and must have a valid e-mail address.
  9. Session Contact is responsible for communicating with any co-presenter(s) regarding acceptance or rejection, deadlines and all other session details.
  10. For all accepted submissions, WSSDA reserves the right to edit title, description or learner outcomes for promotional purposes.
  11. Session Contact agrees to complete WSSDA’s online A/V form by August 18, 2008 and finalize all presenter/co-presenter information online by September 12.

Session standards

  1. Topic is of high interest and relevance to today’s school directors.
  2. Presentation provides solid, practical, “how-to” information.
  3. Information can be used or the program replicated in a wide variety of school districts.
  4. Title is engaging and appropriate.
  5. Description clearly, concisely depicts what the presentation will include.
  6. Role of the school board is clearly articulated.
  7. Session outcomes are clear, measurable and achievable in the time allowed.
  8. Creativity and innovation are evident in the approach taken to this issue or topic.
  9. Evidence supports the program’s success.
  10. Presentation delivery methods address adult learning principles and varied learner styles (e.g., multi-media, audience interaction, visual aids) to ensure an engaging and lively presentation.
