workshops, publications for school board candidates

WSSDA is again undertaking a
public information campaign to educate school board candidates about the
duties and responsibilities of serving as an elected school director,
and to inform the general public about the important role of school
boards in promoting student learning and achievement.
Anyone thinking about
running for school board will be interested in
Serving on Your Local School Board: A Guide for Candidates.
This section provides an overview of what a school board does,
the requirements and responsibilities of being a school board member,
and the traits which contribute to effective board service. Also
available is the WSSDA manual
Serving on Your
Local School Board: A Guide to Effective Leadership.
Those topics will also be
the subject of 22 workshops that will be held around the state July
16-26 (see schedule below). The free workshops will cover areas such as state and local
education governance, current education issues, and the requirements and
responsibilities of school board service. (These are not workshops on
how to campaign.)
