A proposal to make the WSSDA Interscholastic Advisory Committee (IAC) a standing committee will go to the Delegate Assembly with a "do not adopt" recommendation from the WSSDA Board of Directors.
WSSDA currently has three standing committees – Legislative, Resolutions and Nominations. Standing committees are made up of school board members elected from each WSSDA director area and have specific responsibilities spelled out in the association’s bylaws.
Although not a standing committee, members of the WSSDA IAC are also elected by director area. All other WSSDA advisory committees and task forces are made up of members appointed by the WSSDA president.
At its last meeting, the WSSDA board considered a request to amend the bylaws to give the IAC the same status as the Legislative, Resolutions and Nominations Committees. The IAC’s responsibilities, currently described in association policy, would be added to the WSSDA bylaws.
Opponents of the idea said that while the IAC is working well and should continue in its current structure, it does not conduct internal association business as do the current standing committees. Supporters contended that, like the Legislative Committee, the IAC formulates positions and recommendations to take to another organization (in the case of the IAC, the Washington Interscholastic Activities Association).
The discussion ended with a majority of the board voting for a "do not adopt" recommendation. The proposal, along with the board’s recommendation, will go to the Delegate Assembly in November. Additional information will be included in the Delegate Assembly handbook, which will be mailed to all school board members and posted on the WSSDA Web site.
