education conference, briefing on draft ed reform proposal
Posted January 19, 2006
Members of the education community are invited to attend the Latino/a Educational Achievement Project's 6th Annual Education Conference and a briefing on LEAP's draft education reform proposal.
The LEAP Conference and the briefing will be held at the Olympia Red Lion Hotel. The conference takes place Feb. 9-11 (immediately prior to the
WASA/WSSDA Legislative Conference). The briefing will be held Feb. 12 at 10:30 a.m. in the Olympic Room.
Gov. Christine Gregoire will be the keynote speaker at the kickoff dinner on Friday. Workshops are scheduled for Friday and Saturday.
LEAP's draft education reform proposal calls for establishing college (and workplace) readiness as the target for school districts and students. Other elements include making use of the 10th grade WASL as a mid-point high school assessment of where students are on the pathway to college readiness, and establishing college and career readiness centers for students who are behind after taking the 10th-grade WASL.
Other topics to be covered:
An update on legislation to allow undocumented students to pay in-state tuition, and the status of the DREAM Act pending in the Congress. The DREAM Act would allow the same students to live, work and go to school here legally.
State demographic trends showing how all populations have changed, short term and long term.
Conference conveners are Ricardo Sanchez, LEAP Board Chair, Ricardo Espinoza, President, Pasco School Board President (and WSSDA board member), and LEAP Advisory Board members. For more information and registration, visit the
LEAP Web site.
