A Sign of Our Commitment — Make a Quilt Square

In my speech during the closing session of our WSSDA conference in Spokane, I invited all members of WSSDA to join me in the commitment to quality education for all children in our state. As a sign of that commitment, I held up a quilt square I have made and asked you all to make your own quilt square. We will sew them together into quilts and banners – to give to the Foundation for fund raising or maybe to those who help us get our job done (the Governor, SPI Bergeson, legislators? – who knows.)

While my square features a star, yours can be of any design you choose. It should have some meaning to you related to education, school board membership and/or WSSDA. Maybe the colors are your district’s or high school’s colors. Maybe the design shows your mascot or an outstanding program you have implemented. Maybe you will use a traditional quilt pattern. After you finish the front of the square, add batting (cotton and polyester blend please) and backing and quilt the square. Embellish it if you like (buttons, beads, fabric paint, etc. – let your imagination fly).

Send your completed square to: Cindy McMullen, N. 112 University Road, #300, Spokane Valley, WA 99206. The sooner the better, but by July 31, 2007 please.

The only requirements are the following:

  • Size: 12" finished

  • Background: Unbleached muslin

  • Batting: Cotton/polyester blend

  • Backing: Unbleached muslin. Put your name, school district and any interesting facts on the back of the square. (You might want to explain why you chose the pattern, fabric or embellishments.)

BE CREATIVE AND HAVE FUN!
