Save $$ — Register now for the Opportunities Conference
There’s still time to save on your registration for the Northwest Conference on Celebrating Educational Opportunities for Diverse Students — we’ve extended the discount for early bird registrations to Friday, April 13. WSSDA hosted this four-state conference in 2003 to rave reviews. This year’s conference promises to be even better with 26 breakout sessions and a slate of great general session speakers, all geared to share innovative programs and strategies that have strengthened achievement across a variety of student populations. The conference takes place April 27-29 at the SeaTac Marriott. For registration materials and session descriptions, visit the WSSDA Web site.

Rice appointed WSSDA Vice President
Congratulations to Yakima School Board Member Martha Rice, who has been appointed WSSDA Vice President for the remainder of 2007. Rice was selected by the WSSDA Board of Directors at its regular meeting this past weekend. Learn more here.

Appointments made to Legislative Committee, IAC
The WSSDA board also approved three appointments to fill committee vacancies — Larry Ayre (Finley) has been appointed to the Legislative Committee for Director Area 11; on the Interscholastic Activities Committee, the appointees are Robert Bunker (South Kitsap) for DA 4 and Dennis Lenz (Clarkston) for DA 10. Many thanks to Larry, Robert and Dennis for contributing their time and talents to WSSDA service.

PDC F-1 due this month
School board members: If you held office in 2006 and your district has 1,000 or more registered voters, you must file a Personal Financial Affairs Statement with the state Public Disclosure Commission by April 16. The form, commonly known as the F-1, can be filed electronically, by mail or in person. Forms and detailed instructions can be found on the PDC Web site. If you have questions, contact the PDC at 360/753-1111 (toll-free 877/601-2828) or pdc@pdc.wa.gov.

Filing, workshops coming soon for school board candidates
Speaking of filing, keep in mind that the dates for submitting declarations of candidacy for school board and other elective offices is much earlier. Starting this year, the candidate filing period is now the first week in June instead of the last week in July (changed because the primary has been moved into August). That also means WSSDA’s biennial school board candidate workshops will be earlier, with 22 sessions scheduled around the state July 16-27. For more information on filing for office, check with your county auditor or elections department. Information for school board candidates, including the full workshop schedule, is posted on the WSSDA Web site.

Finance measures pass in 10 districts
Congratulations to the following districts for passing finance measures in the March special election: Cape Flattery, Colton, Garfield, Highline, Lamont, Othello, Palouse, Skykomish, South Bend and Sprague.
