Math report available online
You may have seen the headlines in our
E-Clippings during the past few days about the draft report provided to the State Board of Education on math standards
in our state. The report is being discussed at the SBE’s meeting in Spokane today (Friday) and will be the subject of focus group meetings in the coming week. The draft report is now available on the
SBE Web site. The next focus group meetings will be held July 23 at ESD 123 in Pasco and July 24 at the Puget Sound ESD in Renton. If you plan to attend, please RSVP to Loy McColm
at 360/725-6027.
Accountability, high school graduation
recommendations
The State Board is also reviewing preliminary recommendations regarding a performance accountability system and the "Meaningful High School Diploma" project. Copies of the draft reports are available on the
SBE Web site.
School board candidate workshops continue
Eleven more school board candidate workshops will be held around the state in the coming week, starting Monday (7/23) in Shoreline, Mount Vernon, Port Angeles and Yakima, followed by Bremerton, Wenatchee and White Salmon (7/24), Puyallup, Aberdeen and Omak (7/25), and Vancouver (7/26). These workshops, which focus on roles and responsibilities for school board members, are getting high marks from attendees. For more information, including complete schedule details, visit the
WSSDA Web site.
Seeking FRN members
If you’re interested in flexing your advocacy muscles at the federal level, consider joining the WSSDA Federal Relations Network. The FRN, organized through the National School Boards Association, works closely with members of Congress and federal policymakers to make sure they hear the perspective of local education leaders on education issues. FRN members are appointed by WSSDA’s president-elect each fall. If you are interested, contact WSSDA’s Sheila Chard at 360/252-3011. Also, an informational meeting will be held at the
WSSDA Legislative Assembly in Yakima.
