WSSDA'S Networking and Support Service for School Board Members
Have you ever felt like you’re all alone in this business of school boarding? Have you ever wished for an objective someone who has "walked in the same shoes" to lend a listening ear or to provide some thoughtful options about a board challenge or frustration?
WSSDA now brings together a group of veteran school board members to help walk you through those challenging situations. The all-new Members Assisting Peers (MAP) program has been updated and reinstated as a membership service. WSSDA takes seriously its goal of supporting school board members across the state, helping them become successful in representing their communities and in achieving high standards for their students.
Who Are MAP Members?
MAP members are veteran school directors who have been recommended by their colleagues because they exemplify the attributes of honesty, integrity, confidentiality and trust … people you can turn to for advice and to share issues in confidence.
Once they agree to accept this role, MAP members participate in an intensive training program that includes topics such as the art of listening, confidentiality and problem solving. The MAP team also learns about WSSDA reference and resource information, the education network and other resources for referral to meet member needs and inquiries.
Your Road MAP to Success
Just as a map guides you in your travels, the MAP program offers a guide to school boarding success. Like a road map, a MAP member does not predict your destination nor select the best route. Those are choices you make. A road map can help you identify options for your trip … some may even warn of difficult terrain. A MAP member can do this for you, too. The road map is most useful in helping you see where you are so you can make necessary adjustments before proceeding on your journey. Likewise with a MAP member.
Additionally, a single road map may not meet all your needs. You may need to consult one for certain information and another for other purposes. There are many MAP members with varying talents and experiences. They can refer you to other MAP members who may have the knowledge and experience you seek. Both a road map and a MAP member can help you gain confidence and direction.
Here are some of the ways MAP members can help resolve issues:
- Provide a sounding board and a support system
- Serve as a network of experienced board members to communicate with regarding issues of boardsmanship
- Help reduce the stress and isolation of board members
- Provide quality resources and support for board assistance
MAP members are trained in many aspects of peer assistance techniques and will help by:
- Listening empathetically and acting as a confidant
- Asking questions to help clarify and identify the problem
- Helping to find supportive resources and materials
- Referring to further counsel from WSSDA, if indicated, or to legal counsel
- Helping to understand governance and the role of a board member
- Encouraging participation in board development activities
- Assisting in the self-discovery of the member’s own resolutions and presenting options for choices
