School Directors and Tribal Leaders to Gather in Ridgefield

By Sean Duke March 10, 2025

On March 21, this year’s first Convening of School Directors and Tribal Leaders takes place in Ridgefield, Washington. A rich and engaging program awaits western Washington school leaders, thanks in large part to the staff and students of North Thurston Public Schools.

The convening will feature a student panel, an adult panel, and a presentation from North Thurston Native Student Program Specialist Jerad Koepp. Koepp will show how government-to-government collaboration takes place in North Thurston Public Schools, followed by firsthand accounts from the panelists.

The convening won’t be just another meeting—it will be a powerful opportunity to build relationships, learn, and prepare to take meaningful actions to support Native students and families. School directors from ESSA-affected districts with over 50% American Indian/Alaska Native enrollment or Title VI Indian Education grants exceeding $40,000 are strongly encouraged to attend.

Also in attendance will be the Office of Native Education Tribal Consultation Program Supervisor Maxine Alex, who will facilitate the panel of school officials and members of the Nisqually Indian Tribe, along with Anna Armstrong, the tribal ambassador for the Washington State School Directors’ Association (WSSDA).

Each spring, WSSDA and the Office of Native Education host the convenings at three locations across eastern, western, and central Washington. While the focus may vary year to year, topics typically include tribal consultation requirements and training, identifying native students, tribal sovereignty curriculum, data sharing, and student outcomes. For this year, the primary focus will be on building relationships.

Don’t miss this invaluable opportunity to connect, learn, and make a lasting impact on Native student success. Attending the March 21 convening in Ridgefield will give you firsthand insights from students, educators, and tribal leaders, equipping you with the knowledge and connections to strengthen partnerships between your district and local tribes.
