Applications Open for the 2026 Leadership WSSDA Program

By Sean Duke October 30, 2025

Since its inception nearly 20 years ago, Leadership WSSDA has helped more than 200 school directors strengthen their leadership skills and deepen their impact. Designed for school directors with at least two years of experience, the program builds personal and professional capacity while connecting participants with peers and state education leaders.

Graduates have gone on to serve on WSSDA committees, the board of directors, and even in the Legislature—including ten who became WSSDA presidents.

A Hands-On Leadership Experience

Leadership WSSDA offers time and structure for experienced directors to explore important education issues together. The learning is active and engaging—through discussions, group activities, and place-based experiences—rather than lecture-based. Participants also connect with leaders from across the state and reflect on current topics in education and governance.

Who Should Apply

This program is open to school directors with at least two years of board service. Newer board members are encouraged to build experience through Board Boot Camp, OnBoard, or by serving on a WSSDA committee.

2026 Program Schedule

Participants attend five sessions throughout the year, each running from midday Thursday to midday Friday:

  • Leadership Defined – Feb. 12–13, Olympia
  • Leadership for Influence – Mar. 19–20, Olympia
  • Leadership for All – May 28–29, TBD
  • Leadership for Change – Sept. 24–25, TBD
  • Leadership for Life & Graduation – Nov. 18, WSSDA Annual Conference

Tuition and Support

Tuition is $1,500, covering program materials and meals. Most districts support participation as part of professional development. Limited scholarships are available for those whose districts do not fund participation. Applicants can request consideration for a scholarship on the program application form.

Apply by January 5, 2026

Applications are open now. A full cohort of 15 participants is needed for the program to run, so early applications are encouraged.
