For the fourth year in a row, the Washington State School Directors’ Association (WSSDA), Association of Washington School Principals (AWSP) and Washington School Administrators Association (WASA) jointly organized a one-day conference focused on educational equity. In early feedback, attendees have described the event as energizing, supercharging, and thought-provoking.

Earlier this spring, WSSDA’s Jessica Vavrus was approached by fellow education professionals and encouraged to apply for the position of executive director of OSPI/AESD network initiatives. As the leader of some of the earliest efforts to forge coordination between the two organizations years ago, Vavrus emerged the successful candidate to succeed Dr. Gene Sharratt, who has announced his retirement. Vavrus will resign from WSSDA effective August 1.

At its April meeting, the WSSDA Board unanimously selected Issaquah School Board President Harlan Gallinger to succeed Geoffery McAnalloy of Federal Way as a Director Area 2 representative. Gallinger is in his fourth year on the Issaquah board and previously served on the Peninsula School District Board from 2012-2015.

Presentation proposals will be accepted online through June 6 at 5 p.m.This year’s conference theme is “Culture of Connecting,” which celebrates the linking of people, the energy of ideas, and the power of the two coming together for progress by both adults and youth. Potential presenters are requested to reflect on how their work supports this theme as they develop their proposal.
